Backups, passwords and privacy

Where your data lives, and how to make sure you keep it.

Everything is in one file, in this app's private storage on this device. It is not synced, not uploaded, and not readable by other apps. There is no account, and no server that has ever seen any of it.

The cost of that is simple: if this device is lost and you have no backup, the data is gone. Nobody can recover it for you.

Making one#

Setup makes a backup whenever you ask, and lists the ones you have. A backup sitting on the same device does not protect you from losing the device, so use Share to send one somewhere else — your own storage, a drive, wherever you keep things.

The password#

An app password does two jobs: it locks the app, and it encrypts every backup made while it is set. That encryption has no back door and no recovery. If you forget the password, the backups made under it cannot be opened by anyone, including you.
