When a figure looks wrong
The usual causes, and where to look first.
Almost every surprising figure has one of a handful of causes. Here they are, with the most likely first.
The low point on the Runway is wrong#
The app can only count what it has been told about. A missing recurring payment on the Due screen is by far the most common cause: a subscription, an insurance premium, a pay that changed. Next, check that each account's balance today matches the bank. If it does not, the difference is an entry that is missing, doubled, or on the wrong date.
A total is missing an account#
An account in a currency with no exchange rate is left out of every total, and the Runway says so above the figures. Add a rate in Setup, under Currencies.
An entry is highlighted in red#
It is dated before the account's most recent reconciled entry, and a statement since then did not confirm it. It may be a cheque not yet cashed, a duplicate of a line the import added as new, or a typing mistake. The red is a prompt to look, not an error.
An imported line appears twice#
The import was not confident enough that the bank's line and the entry you had typed were the same, usually because the amount or the date differed, so it added the bank's line as new. It leans that way on purpose: a visible duplicate is easy to fix, while two different entries silently merged into one would not be. Delete whichever of the two you do not want to keep: the reconciled one is the bank's own.
Spending seems too high#
Check that moving money between your own accounts was entered as a transfer, not as a withdrawal from one and a deposit into the other. Transfers are left out of spending; a withdrawal is not. The same goes for paying a credit card: pay it with Pay card, which records a transfer.
A card payment was imported as spending#
The app files a payment to a card as a transfer only when it is sure which card it was paid to. When it is only fairly sure, the line stays as spending with a note naming the card. Choose Card payment on that line before applying. Filling in the card's issuer and last four digits on its form helps the next import recognise it.
Reminders do not arrive#
Reminders are off until switched on in Setup, and the device must allow the app to notify. On Windows, a copy of Alvenera not installed from the Microsoft Store can only show reminders while it is open.
The app closed unexpectedly#
It writes what happened to a log file next to its data file. Setup shows where that is, under Where your data is kept. Send that file to [email protected] if you want us to look: nothing is sent automatically.
