Splitting an entry across categories

One receipt, several categories, and every total still adding up.

Some money is more than one thing. A big-box receipt is groceries and household goods and a present; a paycheque is a salary with tax and pension taken off it. Filed under one category, either makes the budget wrong in two places at once.

On the entry's form, tick Split across categories. The entry's category and amount become the first line; add lines, choose a category for each, and move the amounts until the note underneath says the lines add up.

  • The entry stays one row in the ledger, which is what a bank statement matches against.
  • A line typed negative goes the other way: on a deposit, it is the tax taken out of the salary.
  • Budget, Where and the exports count each line under its own category.
One receipt split between two categories. The note under the lines says when they add up.
